It will not often be considered the most fun game in the realm of gaming, but keno has millions and millions of fanatical followers. As well it should! It’s a routinely entertaining lotto-type game that’s simple to play, abundantly available in tons of different styles, and one that can yield mega-dollars for gamblers who master its endless subtle nuances. But let’s begin with the beginner’s rules for now.
When describing keno to novices, some gaming connoisseurs compare it to lotto. This is at least partially apt, in that each game is fundamentally numerical. However, to take that comparison too far can be to discount the countless unique traits that make keno so compelling. Unlike bingo, keno gamblers have the power to pick the numbers for every card.
Keno cards have a grand total of eighty numbers, but the user is given an extra level of personal responsibility by being able to choose as numerous (or as few) numbers as he thinks is appropriate. And it doesn’t take a doctor of keno to come up with how to fill out a card: all you do is circle or otherwise mark all of your chosen numbers with a every day old#2 pencil like you had back in school.
Once you’ve checked your numbers, take your card back to the keno pit manager at the keno booth. The keno pit manager will record those numbers and then give you a receipt. Do not misplace this (potentially) expensive piece of paper! Even if the clerk remembers your face and wants help out, without a winning ticket on you, you will be given precisely $.00 for your actions.
OK, so there you have strategy number one: always take care to keep your keno receipt. Let’s move on to something a tiny bit more advanced, yes?
Once you’ve checked off your numbers, settle into a comfortable keno booth and watch the action unfold on the keno monitor. That is where the winning numbers are shown in lights. If you marked winning numbers, mark your card appropriately. Be sure not to move to slowly, or sit there praising yourself for an obnoxious length of time. You really want to get up to the keno booth to collect your winnings, as a new drawing will almost certainly start within 5 minutes.
Strategy #2: always be sure to get back to the keno booth on time!
Assuming you can’t trust yourself to beat that 5 minute margin each and every time, you always have the option of using a "multi-race" card. These include the very same set of your chosen numbers on anywhere from two to 20 cards. When the maximum number of rounds (fitting the amount of tickets) is completed, you will then be able to get off your numb butt and go get your winnings.
Yet another alternative is known as a "stray and play" keno slip, which normally allows you make number choices for thirty rounds or more. Hell, you can take a Swedish massage and not have to worry about getting back in time to get your numbers. Most "stray and play" game cards are good for up to a whole year after you by it!
